19.and dropped these letters on the country roads where they were sure to be found.
20.One of these letters aroused resentments that burned for a lifetime.
21.In the autumn of 1842,
22.he ridiculed a vain Irish politician by the name of James Shields.
23.Shields, sensitive and proud, boiled with indignation.
24.He challenged Lincoln to fight a duel.
25.Lincoln didn’t want to fight,
26.but he couldn’t get out of it and save his honor.
27.On the appointed day,
28.he and Shields prepared to fight to the death,
29.but at the last minute,
30.their seconds interrupted and stopped the duel.
31.This accident taught Lincoln an invaluable lesson in the art of dealing with people.
32.Never again did he write an insulting letter.
33.Never again did he ridicule anyone.

35.he almost never criticized anybody for anything.
36.Any fool can criticize, condemn, and complain — and most fools do.
37.But it takes character and self-control to be understanding and forgiving.

9.A problem-free life is an illusion — a mirage in the desert.

13.Life has its ups and downs, its peaks and its valleys.
14.No one is up all the time, nor are they down all the time.
15.Problems do end. They are all resolved in time.
16.You may not be able to control the times,
17.but you can compose your responses.
18.You may not have chosen your tough time,
19.but you can choose how you will react to it.
20.For instance, what is the positive reaction to a terrible financial setback?
21.In this situation would it be the positive reaction to cop out and run away?
22.Escape through alcohol, drug, or suicide?
23.No! Such negative reactions only produce greater problems
24.by promising a temporary “solution” to the pressing problem.
25.The positive solution to a problem may require courage to initiate it.
26.When you control your reaction to the seemingly uncontrollable problem of life,
27.then in fact you do control the problem’s effect on you.
28.Your reaction to the problem is the last word!
29.That’s the bottom line.
30.What will you let this problem do to you?
31.It can make you tender or tough.
32.It can make you better or bitter.
33.It all depends on you.
34.In the final analysis, the tough people who survive the tough times do so
35.because they’ve chosen to react positively to their predicament.
36.Tough times never last, but tough people do.

38.History teaches us that every problem has a lifespan.

22.who have strong impersonal interests involving appropriate activities.
23.It is in this sphere that long experience is really fruitful,
24.and it is in this sphere that the wisdom born of experience
25.can be exercised without being oppressive.
26.It is no use telling grown-up children not to make mistakes,
27.both because they will not believe you,
28.and because mistakes are an essential part of education.
29.But if you are one of those who are incapable of impersonal interests,
30.you may find that your life will be empty
31.unless you concern yourself with your children and grandchildren.
32.In that case you must realize that
33.while you can still render them material services,
