One of the most widespread theories about the origin of this day is linked to the Gregorian calendar reform in 1582. France was the first country to adopt the Gregorian calendar, which meant the New Year was moved from March 25th to January 1st. Those who failed to keep up with the change and continued celebrating the New Year between March 25th and April 1st became targets for jokes, which might explain why April 1st is specifically associated with the modern holiday.

Mythological explanations for the emergence of April Fool's Day have also been proposed. One story, rooted in Roman mythology, involves the goddess Ceres (Goddess of grain and the harvest) and her daughter Proserpina. According to the myth, Pluto, the God of the Dead, abducted Proserpina and brought her to the underworld. Proserpina called out to her mother Ceres for help, but Ceres, only able to hear the echo of her daughter's voice,frantically searched in vain. The Roman festival of Cerealia, commemorating Ceres' unsuccessful search for her daughter, is believed by some to be the mythological precursor to the fool's errands popular on April 1st.
