Threeyours ago, I was 17. My high school has an exchange program with American highschools. I was in a fearless age and curious about outside world. It was neveran easy decision. The exchange program only for one year, but we all knew thatonce I choose to study abroad I have to stay abroad until graduating fromcollege because Chinese High Schools’ courses are so intense that I have no wayto catch up after one year abroad. I was very lucky to have parents who arewilling to support me to see the world and live my life as the way I wanted.Finally, I quitted the school in China and got on the plane to American alone. WhenI ate the wired sandwich on the airplane, I told myself: “I am ready for all challengesand I will be strong. “At that point of time, I barely knew anything aboutAmerica except the word “America”.

I first landed at Winona, MN and studied there for two years. Life was hard atthe beginning. I knew literally no one there and I spoke confusing English witha strong Chinese accent, which I still do. But you can never image how anxiousI was when I talk to people in English. I did many silly things which embarrassedme so much at that time. There was once I had a problem with my laptop in mycomputer draw class, then I asked a guy sitting next to me, I said to him: “Excuseme, can I help you”? That was so funny and I would never forget his face withconfusion at that moment. We don’t have cash back in China. So, the firstsupermarket trip is mean to be another funny joke. The cashier asked me: “Wouldyou like any cash back?” I was surprised and thought: Wow! What a greatAmerican! I can even get free money after shopping! Then I relied her: “Sure! Asmuch as possible”! She gave me a maximum amount, and I did not realize that wasmy own money until I told this amazing supermarket experience to my friends. Livingalone is not as cool as I thought and I was not as strong as I thought either. However,without being silly and making mistakes I can never grow and make things right.

Making American friends was another big challenge for me. There was a period of time I hided myself in Chinese group and spoke as less English as possible. One day, Iwoke up and asked myself why I am here and what is the meaning of giving upeverything in China and come here to speak Chinese all day long? I could notfind an answer so I decided to walk out my comfort zone and make Americanfriends. I find it hard at first because we grow up differently; we watchdifferent movies, read different novels and play different sports. When peopleare talking around me I can hardly got the chance to speak because I have noidea about the subject they talked. When people are talking about basketball, volleyball,football or soccer, I can only tell them that I am good at playing ping pong. Endof story. I was self-satisfied in China but after I came to American, I felt I know nothing. Then I realized that textbooks are not the only thing I need tolearn. From then on, I learnt volleyball, basketball, pool, photography andpainting, I joined cross country term in high school, I listen to the newsradios every morning and I watch American TV shows. I gained more skills and knowledgethat I can be proud of as I get deeper understanding of American Culture. WhatI really want to say is that the experience of studying abroad definitelychanges my life and my perspective of the world.

abroad，英语单词，可以用作为“副词、形容词、名词”，作副词时主要意为“在国外;到海外”。作形容词时主要意为“往国外的”。作名词时主要意为“海外;异国”。

其中：“a-”是一个常见的单词前缀，在辅音之前是拉丁语“ab”的形式之一，意为“远离，离开”等;

而后面的“broad”在古英语中表示“宽敞的”、“并非狭窄的”(1300年左右)，之后慢慢衍生出了含义“河流在平坦表面上扩张形成的浅草湖”(1650年左右)，在现代英语中也可以译为“广泛的”(1741年以后)等。

“a-”与“broad”结合形成了新的单词“abroad”。

1 on overseas study

Recent years, more and more Chinese people have chosen to study abroad. To this tendency, some people think it is not good, as most of the overseas learners do not come back, whereas I hold a different opinion.

In my opinion, it is a good thing that more Chinese people go abroad. There are three reasons. First, the overseas learners can improve their ability through the study. They can grasp advanced technologies and their language ability can be improved as well. Second, with the rapid development of China, more and more overseas learners will choose come back, using their abundant knowledge studied abroad to serve for the motherland. The third, the government and most domestic enterprises are willing to provide favorable treatments to attract them to come back.

Although some do not want to come home, we are glad to see that there are more overseas learners chosen to work at home than before. For the above reasons, I think it is not a bad thing for more and more Chinese study abroad.

2 The other day I announced that I would go abroad for further studies right after my college education. My dec is ion evoked the immediate objection of my family： Why? Why should I borrow a huge sum of money for overseas studies while I might receive the same education at home at relatively low cost? My answer is ： in addition to knowledge， I can gain experience that those who stay at home will never have. First， experience is the opportunity for the real-life use of foreign languages. While a person can study a foreign language at home， the effect can never be compared with constant use of the language in academic and everyday life. There is no better opportunity to improve second-language skills than living in the country in which it is spoken. Living in Engl is h-speaking countries such as America and Australia for several years， for example， my Engl is h will be as perfect as native speakers. Second， living and studying abroad of fers me a different perspective of the world. On a university campus， foreign students are likely to encounter their counterparts from different countries and areas and are exposed to different ideas and values. Th is helps me to have a meaningful understanding of different societies and inevitably sees my own country in a new light. Third， overseas experience， frustrating and painful as it may be， is helpful. A person going abroad for study of ten experiences much more difficulty——difficulty in adapting to a new culture and in dealing with all problems alone. Yet， the difficulty， coupled with the frustration brought on by culture shock， is a rewarding experience for one’s future life and development of personality. Although going abroad is expensive and perhaps painful， the pay of f is worthwhile. For the benefit is not merely knowledge gained， but the experience desirable in one’s personal life.

3 With the developing of the world, the world we live has become much smaller. Nowadays, more and more students have to make a choice on whether or not should they study abroad. Studying in and abroad both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Needless to say, to study in one's own country is fairly cheap and convenient. One doesn't have to pass exams such as TOEFL, SAT, or something. However, they also have to take exams so as to enter college. And they usually can not receive the latest information of modern technology in the college in China. What's more, in China there ane not enough opportunities for one to develop your own idea. It is probable that they can not get a good job after they graduated, for what the had learned being out of date. And they are likely ony to do what they have been told, instead of thinking for themselves. If you can do without the few advantages that study in your own country, you will find the college abroad can offer you a better choice. Although the tuition of studying abroad is huge, there are a great number of people who can get the scholarship. And the education system abroad is different from China. It is free which can blaze your creativity. On the other hand, living abroad offers you a chance of broading your horizon. You can be familiar with a different culture. The last but not the least, in the other country, your second language can be practiced as good as your tongue language whch will improve your competitive ability in the future. So if you have a chance to study abroad, take it without hesitated.
