When the Kids' Favorite Toy Is Daddy's iPhone

Yesterday, my toddler broke another toy. But this wasn't an inexpensive, plastic doo-dad. It was my husband's iPhone.

Like many parents these days, my husband and I sometimes band over our smartphones to our son to soothe him or keep him entertained. It's partly laziness on our party---no other toy, it seems, can captivate him like the iPhone or BlackBerry. He's fascinated by the buttons and touchscreen, the sounds and lights. He hold it up to his ear and pretends he's making an important business call (or arranging a playdate with his best friend.) He somehow even managed to reprogram my BlackBerry to autotype in the Catalan language.

When we take away the BlackBerry or iPhone he wails; no other plaything even a pretty realistic toy cellphone satisfies him as much. (The marketing copy for the toy phone says "This authentic looking play phone will surely distract your child from getting a hold of your cell phone!" Ha! I wish.)

We often hide our phones-we don't want him to ruin them or grow too dependent on them but be almost always tracks them down once he hears the ring or the buzz of an incoming message. (Hiding a phone is tough, however, for those parents who need to have phones handy in case they're on call or the office beckons.) And when we pick up the phone or check messages, that only makes our son want the phone more, since he always wants whatever is in our hands.

Invariably, my son sticks the phone in his mouth and it ends up slobbery and pocked with bitemarks. Or when be eventually tires of the phone, he'll toss it aside, which is how my husband's iPhone met its recent doom.

We're not alone in using our cellphones as high-tech rattles. The AP recently ran a story on how more parents are downloading kid-friendly apps, such as white noise and rattle sounds and easy video games, to their cellphones. And according to a recent NPR report, one parent to encourage his 11-month-old baby to crawl, waves his Blackberry so the baby will crawl toward the gadget.

Readers, do you ever resort to handing over your smartphones to your kids? Any horror stories? Any good kid-friendly apps to recommend?

The view over a valley of a tiny village with thatched(草盖的) roof cottages around a church; a drive through a narrow village street lined with thatched cottages painted pink or white; the sight over the rolling hills of a pretty collection of thatched farm buildings-these are still common sights in parts of England. Most people will agree that the thatched roof is an essential part of the attraction of the English countryside.

Thatching is in fact the oldest of all the building crafts practised in the British Isles(英伦诸岛). Although thatch has always been used for cottage and farm buildings, it was once used for castles and churches, too.

Thatching is a solitary(独自的) craft, which often runs in families. The craft of thatching as it is practised today has changed very little since the Middle Ages. Over 800 full-time thatchers are employed in England and Wales today, maintaining and renewing the old roofs as well as thatching newer houses. Many property owners choose thatch not only for its beauty but because they know it will keep them cool in summer and warm in winter.

In fact, if we look at developing countries, over half the world lives under thatch, but they all do it in different ways. People in developing countries are often reluctant to go back to traditional materials and would prefer modern buildings. However, they may lack the money to allow them to import the necessary materials. Their temporary mud huts with thatched roofs of wild grasses often only last six months. Thatch which has been done the British way last from twenty to sixty years, and is an effective defence against the heat .

1. Which of the following remains a unique feature of the English countryside?

A) Cottages with thatched roofs. B) Churches with cottages around them.

C) Rolling hills with pretty farm buildings. D) Narrow streets lined with pink or white houses.

2. What do we know about thatching as a craft?

A) It is quite different from what it used to be.

B) It is in most cases handed down among family members.

C) It is practised on farms all over England.

D) It is a collective activity.

3. Thatched houses are still preferred because of ________.

A) their durability B) their easy maintenance

C) their cheap and ready-made materials D) their style and comfort

4. People in developing countries also live under thatch because ______-.

A) they like thatched houses better than other buildings

B) thatch is an effective defence against the heat

C) thatched roof houses are the cheapest

D) thatched cottages are a big tourist attraction

5. We can learn from the passage that _______.

A) the English people have a special liking for thatched houses

B) most thatched cottages in England are located on hillsides

C) thatching is a building craft first created by the English people

D) thatched cottages in England have been passed down from ancient times

Conversation 1

M: Mr。 Brown‘s lectures are so boring。

W: Yes, he is not a very exciting speaker。 But the subject is interesting。

M: During every one of his lectures, I try to listen I really try。 But after about 10 minutes my mind begins to wander and I lose concentration。 But I see that you seem to be OK。 How do you stay focused through the entire hour?

W: Well, what I do is keep my pen moving。

M: What do you mean?

W: It‘s a method of active concentration I read about。 One of the most effective ways to concentrate is to write things down。 But it has to be done by hand, not typing on a keyboard。 You see writing by hand forces you to actually engage with what you’re learning in a more physical way。

M: Do you review your notes afterwards then?

W: Sometimes but that‘s not important。 My notes may or may not be useful but the point is that by writing down what Mr。 Brand says I can follow his line of thinking more easily。 In fact, sometimes I draw a little too。

M: You draw in class and that helps me pay attention?

W: Yes, honestly it works for me。 I just draw little lines and nonsense really。 It was also in that article I read。 It can keep the mind active, prevent getting bored and help to concentrate。 Again the point is to listen hard while keeping the pen moving。 If I‘m at home and I need to study what I do is read out loud。 It has a similar effect to writing by hand。 It helps memorize information in a physical way。

Question 8。 What does the man think of Mr。 Brown‘s lectures?

Question 9。 What does the woman do during Mr。 Brown‘s lectures?

Question 10。 Why does the woman draw in class?

Question 11。 What does the woman say about reading out loud?

Conversation 2

M: And where is this?

F :These photos are from the Taj Mahal in India。 We went there about ten years ago for our honeymoon。

M: Was it romantic。

F: Yeah。 The Taj Mahal was a very romantic place。 The guide told us there is a famous love story behind this building that all Indians learn in school。 I think it was during the 1600 and the princess at that time died while giving birth to her 14th child。 The Emperor loved the princess so much and was so sad when she died that he ordered the palace to be built in her honor。

M: Wow ! That sounds very romantic。 It looks amazing。

F: Yes it‘s gorgeous。 It’s also larger in real life than it looks in the photos。 The building is very tall and there are gardens in a wall around it all。 It‘s all built in this white stone and some walls of the building are decorated with jewels。

M :It must have been very crowded when you were there。

F: Yes it‘s a very famous tourist destination。 So there are thousands of visitors every day。

M: Was the rest of India crowded?

F:Yes, very crowded in many cities。 It was sometimes so crowded that it was difficult to walk along the streets especially through busy markets。 And there are so many cars。 Traffic was terrible but the people were friendly。 The culture is amazing and we had a great time。

M:What about the food?

F: the Indian food is great。 There are lots of different dishes to try and every region has its own special food。

Question 12。 For what purpose did the woman go to India?

Question 13。 Why was the Taj Mahal built?
